Club Activity Examples

Orienteers are very good at learning from others and one way that British Orienteering supports clubs and members to develop orienteering is to provide the means for members and clubs to share ideas that have worked well for them.

This section of the website depends on you letting British Orienteering know when you have tried something that has been successful – don’t keep all your ideas to yourself – let other members in on your success!

Examples of ideas that have worked and are now considered to be examples of good practice for increasing Club activities include:

  • DVO New Year Street O in Bakewell.

  • SROC decided to try a new approach to their autumn 2007 events where they would try a series of Saturday morning events in a localised area. Details of the initiative can be read here

  • John Britton (MDOC) describes hoe to organise a Street O and provides an example map and answer sheet.
  • The Bennachie Concept that has been developed in Scotland and considers different way of organising and using a permanent course in a forest. This concept has been much used for recreation orienteering. For more information see: The Bennachie Concept
  • Introductory events taking orienteering to the public in the Ballater and Braemar areas of Scotland; more is available at: MAROC paper
  • The ‘Malvern & District' initiative run by Harlequins OC which resulted in a large membership increase; an overview is available accompanied by examples of the posters used, example-1 and example-2
  • Examples of how MDOC and SLOW have organised ‘events' to attract members of running clubs to orienteering
  • How Mid Wales Orienteers quadrupled club membership
  • The OD Junior Development Plan which takes a targeted approach to junior development
  • School Sprint Series; this format can be adapted for clubs and squads in a park or wood and includes: Guidelines, Example Map and Control Card; thanks to Fran Stone of Barrow Schools Orienteering Association
  • Nottinghamshire Model for a Schools Festival or a beginners Permanent Orienteering Course, including: Guidelines, Acorn Woods map (jpegpdf) and Acorn Woods Teachers notes
  • BARRO School-Club Link provides practical support

On behalf of its members and the sport, British Orienteering thanks the people and clubs who have made these examples of good practice available to others.
