Details

Description:Haslingden Grane is a mix of complex quarry workings, physical open moorland and runnable wooded and open hillside, providing a great variety of terrain for orienteering. Courses have been planned to make best use of the quarry area, which was remapped for this event in Spring 2015. Competitors should be aware that the complexity of this area has meant that the mapping has been simplified to best present the area in a legible format, and hence some subtle features may not be shown. Walls across the area are in varying states of repair. The ruined wall symbol can encapsulate largely intact walls, which have a significant number of ruined sections, down to walls reduced to linear heaps of stone. Walls and fences may only be crossed at crossing points, or where significantly ruined (a gap in the wall or a hole in the fence) - the majority of these have been overmarked with the 'crossing point' symbol for clarity. Anyone found crossing intact sections of wall or fence will be disqualified. Course notes: There are few paths across the area, and White and Yellow course competitors will be expected to follow walls as well as tracks, and traverse some steep ground. The area is grazed by cattle, resulting in some tracks becoming churned up in wet weather - wellies might be a good idea for young children if wet! Course lengths have been shortened to reflect the physicality of the terrain and degree of climb. The shortest technical courses have been planned so as to offer the easiest line through the terrain, avoiding the majority of steep slopes and the roughest ground, however there will still be a few rough sections to traverse.
