Details

Description:Terrain: Despite the name, 90% of Aislaby Moor is runnable, self-generated and unmanaged broadleaf woodland. There are some open areas that are infested with heather and bracken that will make for slow running in June. Much of the area is gently sloping, but the Long and Medium courses will encounter the sides of old quarry workings where the famous Aislaby Stone, used in many old sandstone buildings, has been quarried for centuries. The Long course will also venture further down the hillside, where the terrain is steep and rocky in places. This course also has a lot of climb – think "Lake District" rather than "moorland" – and will offer a significant physical challenge. The Planners' advice is that people who normally run Green, Short Green or Light Green courses will enjoy the Medium course, while people who normally run Blue, Brown or Black courses will enjoy the Long course. IMPORTANT Please be very careful when running close to the quarry edges, where there are many high crags and some very steep slopes. Some quarry edges close to a path used by the Junior / Novice course will be yellow-taped. Do not cross the yellow tapes. There are bike paths in the area. For your own safety and theirs, please be alert for speedy mountain bikers. Also, please note that the extensive network of bike paths within the quarries is not mapped for the sake of clarity. There are also many mountain bike tracks throughout the woods and new ones can appear at short notice, so some may not be mapped. Facilities: Toilet in an area of hard standing near the Finish. First aid at Download. No drinks will be provided. Please bring your own refreshments. Safety: Please see the Covid-19 section at www.clok.org. Please make sure that you download even if you do not complete your course. A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk. Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility. CLOK strongly recommends that you carry a whistle at this (and every) orienteering event. If you have a relevant medical condition, please inform the Organiser before the event.
