Junior Competitions

There are many orienteering events organised for juniors at school, club and country level. If you would like further information please email the National Office.

British School Score Championships (BSSC)

The BSSC is held annually in October and is aimed at school teams comprising junior orienteers of all abilities in school years

5 – 13. Further information can be found on the BSOA website.

British Schools Orienteering Championships (BSOC)

The BSOC is held annually in November and provides a good level of competition for junior orienteers with a wide range of abilities in school years 5 – 13. Competitors at this event may be selected for the World Schools Championships.

Yvette Baker Trophy

The Yvette Baker Trophy is a junior event for clubs in England and Wales. It is named after Britain’s first World Champion, Yvette Baker, who won Gold in the short distance in Scotland in 1999. The event is aimed at juniors of all abilities from classes M/W18 and under. The 2023 gold times are available here. More information regarding the current competition can be found here.

Yvette Baker Shield

The Yvette Baker Shield, held at the same event as the Trophy competition, is for smaller clubs and requires only 5 juniors to make a team.

Jamie Stevenson Trophy

Jamie Stevenson won the World Championships in the Sprint distance in Switzerland in 2003. The Jamie Stevenson Trophy is the Scottish equivalent of the Yvette Baker Trophy.

Peter Palmer Relays

The Peter Palmer relay is named after one of orienteering's finest coaches, who wanted to create an event that was similar to the relays that take place in Scandinavia.  This event is one of the most enjoyable with clubs fielding mixed relay teams of six girls and boys.

Junior Inter-Regional Championships

The twelve regions of the United Kingdom compete against each other in an individual and a relay event. The top two runners from each region in the individual event and the top two boys and girls relay teams count towards a total score to determine the Regional Champions. The age groups are M/W14, M/W16 and M/W18.

Junior Home Internationals (JHI's)

The Junior Home Internationals is a yearly event where the best juniors from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales compete against each. A maximum of four juniors from six age groups are eligible to compete.  The age groups are M/W14, M/W16 and M/W18.
