FINAL DETAILS FOR BNC WEEKEND 9/10 February 2013

WELCOME

On behalf of British Orienteering, South Yorkshire Orienteers (‘SYO’) welcomes all competitors to this weekend of orienteering in Tankersley and Hesley Woods. Many people will have memories of the north west part of Tankersley Woods from the May 2011 British Relay championships. Both days now utilise the south east part of Tankersley Woods and Hesley Woods, which was last used for orienteering more than 10 years ago. You will be challenged by detailed technical orienteering over the two days.

The events are the first and second of the UK Orienteering League, new for 2013.

SYO would like to thank all those who have worked hard over several months to help stage these events, especially Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre, St Pauls Developments and other landowners and Neil Northrop who has updated his previous Tankersley map and extended it to include Hesley Woods. Thanks also to the many volunteers, without whom the events could not take place.

Enjoy the terrain and the courses, but do take time if staying over to visit some of the other attractions in the area. Tankersley is on the edge of the Peak District and Pennines and Wentworth Castle, the Hepworth Gallery and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park are all nearby. Yorkshire hospitality can be enjoyed at any of the many good pubs in the area.

Travel and Parking (cars & minibuses), both days

Parking will be signed from Junction 35 of the M1, take the A629 towards Chapeltown, and then NE from Chapeltown along the A6135. Once starting to climb a hill, with woods on the left hand side, parking is signposted to the right into Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre (SK 360968). This is available on Saturday 9th from 1600 hours. Please observe the 10mph speed limit, there will be people walking to assembly and courses do cross this track. Parking is on a flat grassed area, and various areas of hardstanding. Please do not make any unnecessary noise when entering and leaving the Scout Centre as there are neighbouring residential properties.

As parking at the Scout Centre is within the competition area, please observe any out of bounds tapes and do not enter the competition area apart from walking to and from assembly along the main track and the signed path to the toilets. PLEASE drive carefully at the Scout Centre and do not interfere with competitors on their courses.

If there is any parking overspill, the reserve parking (SK 352975) is on Churchill Way on an industrial estate. If required, cars will be directed there. Ensure you leave no mud etc, we need to leave this area spotless. If this reserve parking is used, it is approximately 1.7 km (25 minutes) to assembly but overspill parking is about 300 metres to the British Night Championships (BNC) start. On the Sunday, if reserve parking is used there is a 1.7 km walk back to assembly, where there is ample space to leave bags in the warm assembly building. The route from reserve parking to assembly and to the BNC start will be taped. As the overspill parking is remote, you should hide all valuable items from prying eyes and secure your vehicle properly, bearing in mind that you may be away from your vehicle for some time.

Assembly

Assembly uses a building close to the finish, which is common to both the BNC and the Middle Distance events. This building will house registration (Sunday only), enquiries, download, results and accomodation. Please, no spiked shoes in the hall and try to bring as little dirt as possible in with you!

Accelerate and Petzl will have stands.

Catering is being provided by Podium Catering from 1630 – 2130 Saturday and 0930 – 1430 Sunday.

Toilets are nearby – there are no toilets at the starts on either day. NO STUDS please in the toilets.

Dogs

Allowed, but must be on a lead at the Scout Activity Centre. They are allowed on the courses apart from 1,2,3 and 3A due to land permissions.

Safety

Whistles are compulsory.

Depending on the weather conditions, cagoules may be compulsory – this will be decided on the day and advised on parking. If weather is bad for the BNC, a clothing transfer from the start back to assembly will be provided.

Within the woods, there are the normal risks but including man-made features such as manholes, retaining walls and fences. Please take care, especially at night.

As a condition of insurance cover we are obliged to draw your attention to the fact that the competition area has been undermined and liable to mining subsidence.  Competitors take part at their own risk.  Whistles are compulsory.

Tankersley Woods is also used by a variety of other people – dog walkers, horse riders, walkers, cyclists, and sometimes illegal off road motorbikes. Please treat other users courteously.

First Aid

Provided by St John’s Ambulance, who will be based at assembly.

For the BNC there will be a first aid kit at the start and, if required, transport back to assembly.

The nearest hospital is Northern General Hospital, Herries Road (A 6102), SHEFFIELD S5 7AU (Grid Ref SK 359903) Tel 01142 434343.

Accommodation

There is still some limited accommodation available at Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre. Rooms are available at £20 per 2 bedded room, between 1630 on 9th and 1230 hours on 10th  February. For further details please contact accommodation@southyorkshireorienteers.org.uk. The door to the accommodation must not be used by other competitors and shoes must be removed upon entry.

Waste

We will have a “take your rubbish home” policy – please take away all your rubbish and help us to keep the arena tidy.  Thank you!

Climb is in the region of 2-3% ie 150m over 6km

All courses close at 2130 hours; please report to finish & download even if retiring.

Note that courses 1 and 2 have greater than 30 controls; please do not use a type 8  SI card we will be able to lend a type 5 at no charge, see enquires(to record all splits as well as controls visited you need a type 6 or 7 SI card).

Competition Detail

All courses involve a manned road crossing, with a maximum 2 minute time out allowed for the crossing. There are controls to punch on either side of the road crossing. There may be another manned road crossing on some courses, but with no time allowance: M/W16 must use this crossing and obey the marshal's instructions and other courses are recommended to use this crossing; although there is little traffic,  it can be fast moving and is better seen from the marshal’s side of the road. Longer courses may involve crossing one or two other minor roads, where the crossings of one are manned. Please take care crossing these roads as traffic, although infrequent, may be fast. There is also a single strand barbed wire fence adjacent to the road in some places, it is difficult to see in the dark, please take extreme care.

In Hesley Woods and the eastern part of Tankersley Woods you may come across controls in the woods that are in place for the Sunday Middle Distance event, and are additional to those you may encounter for other courses – check your control code.

The BNC is only open to members of British Orienteering and to members of overseas IOF affiliated Federations. Competitors are eligible to be British Championships medallists provided that on the day of the competition they are a member of British Orienteering and either a British Citizen or have been a member of British Orienteering for a period of at least 3 years prior to the competition. This must be declared at the time of entry to the competition. Non-eligible competitors can still run at the BNC.

Seeded start times for the BNC (as per BO guidelines) have been allocated and all start times will be posted on the Fabian4 website (www.fabian4.co.uk). It is a timed start.

There is one start which is approximately 2 km (allow 30 minutes) from assembly along footpaths and involves a manned road crossing. Follow tapes out of entrance to Scout Centre and turn left down hill; follow pavement until you reach marshal at road crossing.

Blank maps will be on display in start lanes.

Finish

The finish is located adjacent to assembly. Report to the finish or download by 9.30pm, please don’t forget to download.

Terrain

Tankersley and Hesley Woods are ideal for the BNC (and the Sunday Middle Distance event), offering detailed technical orienteering within a complex network of significant and minor paths. The woods have a rich industrial heritage and during the war contained factories and railways which were heavily bombed. There is a wealth of detail with many bell pits and bomb craters spread across mixed vegetation comprising natural oak woodland through to reclaimed spoil heaps with maturing shrubs and young trees.

The area has been worked for coal and iron, which has left complex slopes covered by the scars of hand-hewn "bell-pits" and other earth-works from the 19th century and before. These days the area is used by dog-walkers, cyclists and trail-bikers, leaving a large number of paths. In the most active biking areas the path network is very complex. The mapping of these paths is good, but small new paths can be created quickly and disappear equally quickly.

There are brambles in parts of the area, but most are at ankle-length, are pretty runnable and have no bramble screen. There are some areas of thicker brambles in the far south of the map.

All courses finish in Hesley Woods, where there are open areas and some buildings.

Map

1:7500, to ISOM 2000, with 5 metre contours, newly updated by Neil Northrop (Millstone Maps) through 2012/13. The map is 59.4 cm x 21 cm, with magnetic north lines at a 45 degree angle to the paper edge. Waterproof paper has been used. There is no legend on the map. The map is offset litho printed. Control descriptions are printed on the map and loose control descriptions will be available in the start lanes. Some previous maps of the areas will be available in assembly. There will be no map collection, do not show your map to anyone who has not completed their run.

Prizes & Trophies

There is a prize giving, with BNC M21L and W21L 1st, 2nd, 3rd prizes sponsored by Petzl (the new Nao for the winners of both courses), numerous other prizes and medals for long class winners.

Will current trophy holders please return trophies in good condition (British Orienteering should have been in contact with current holders to confirm return of trophies).

Complaints & Protests

Any competitor who wishes to make a complaint should go to Enquiries (at Assembly) to discuss the matter with the Organiser.  If the competitor is not happy after the Organiser’s decision he/she can raise a protest.  Protests should be addressed to the Controller.  The protest will be dealt with in accordance with BO Rules 2013 Rule 9.3.  If required, a jury will be convened and a written report made.  We ask competitors to be courteous and not abusive in discussing their complaints.

In Area column, H = Hesley Wood and T = Tankersley East

All courses close at 1400 hours; please report to finish & download even if retiring.

A free string course will be provided on Sunday.

Competition Detail

White & Yellow courses will cross the main access track near the main eastern car park; please follow the road crossing marshal’s instructions.

Green to Black will cross the A6135 Chapeltown Road at the same timed out crossing point twice, both into Tankersley and returning back into Hesley; maximum 75 seconds has been allowed for each road crossing. There are controls to punch at either side of the road on both the outward and return legs, they are different for both legs so be careful to punch the correct control. Please follow the marshal’s instructions.

There is a high density of controls within Hesley Wood: as with all middle distance events take care that you are at the right control.

Starts

Starts are between 1030-1230. Call up will be 4 minutes before your start time with loose control descriptions at -3 and blank maps at -2 minutes. Start times will be posted on the SYO website (www.southyorkshireorienteers.org.uk). It will be a punching start. Late starts will be at the discretion of the start officials when a spare start time becomes available.

There is one start in Hesley Woods, approximately 200 metres east of assembly. Blank maps will be on display in start lanes.

Finish

The finish is located near assembly. Courses close at 1400, please report to download by then.

Terrain

The majority of the courses are within Hesley Woods, which splits into two distinct parts. The north east part is very similar to Tankersley Woods, offering detailed technical orienteering but with fewer paths and reduced undergrowth. There is a wealth of detail with many bell pits and bomb craters spread across mixed vegetation.

The southern and south west part has few bell pits and is a mixture of open woods, open areas, manmade features and buildings; there are also more paths.

As the Scout Centre is private land, there are few other users of the area.

For those courses also using the eastern part of Tankersley Woods, see the terrain description for the BNC.

Map

1:7500, to ISOM 2000, with 5 metre contours, newly updated by Neil Northrop (Millstone Maps) through 2012/13. The map is on A4 with magnetic north lines parallel to the paper edge. Waterproof paper has been used. There is a legend on the map. The map has been digitally printed. A blank map will be on display at assembly. Control descriptions are printed on the map and loose control descriptions will be available in the start lanes. White and yellow maps should be collected from registration.
