Organiser's comments

When I took over the organisation of the British Middle Distance Orienteering Championships at the end of February 2014 I really didn’t know what I was letting myself in for. With no experience of organising a major orienteering event, let alone one of the premier events in the orienteering calendar, I only agreed to take it on if Doug Peel, the BOC2010 organiser, would act as my mentor. This he did and, thanks to considerable input and guidance, I came through the experience with a really positive attitude.

The event as you experienced it was not the one the Walton Chasers originally envisaged. Due to an aggressive tree felling programme we lost the best area for this type of event (and one with less of a bracken problem), then we couldn’t get the assembly area we wanted (though the one we ended up in was superb), then the original organiser reluctantly had to stand down (hence my involvement).

Hiring equipment for the event was made easy by the involvement of Sally Pygott, the Major Events Manager. If I had realised earlier how much work she was prepared to do on my behalf, I would have let her! Despite this being a BOF event put on by a club on behalf of BOF, Sally made sure I was firmly in the driving seat when it came to making decisions about the event. Our working relationship was fantastic and I would have no hesitation in working with her again.

I understand that there were many complaints, some made in rather unpleasant terms, about road signage. We were not allowed to put up signs, but we did provide sufficient information to get to the event. Not mentioning the lack of signage in the final details was an oversight for which I apologise and I hope you can be a little more forgiving in the future when slip-ups do occur. Please remember: this is an amateur sport put on by amateurs.

On the up side, the many positive comments heard on the day and subsequently have gladdened my heart. The smooth running of the event would not have been possible but for the many volunteers who helped before and on the day.
