Licensed Coaches

British Orienteering trains and qualifies coaches in orienteering at Levels 1 to 4. Over 2000 coaches have been qualified since the awards began. In order to maintain a register of coaches that British Orienteering is confident are active and knowledgeable in current coaching methods a ‘License to Practice’ scheme has been implemented during 2007.

The term 'License to Practice' identifies those Orienteering Coaches who meet the following criteria:

To maintain a License to Practice status, coaches will also be required to demonstrate and provide evidence that:

  • They have undertaken approapriate CPD in the last three years.
  • They hold a current (issued within the last three years) First Aid Certificate, appropriate to their coaching level:
    • UKCC Level 1 coaches must possess a current first aid certificate resulting from at least 4 hours of training with an organization which is a Health and Safety Executive approved course provider. The award of the certificate must involve an element of assessment and the training must cover basic life support and emergency aid.
    • UKCC Level 2 coaches and above must possess a current first aid certificate resulting from at least 8 hours of training with an organization which is a Health and Safety Executive approved course provider. The award of the certificate must involve an element of assessment and the training must cover more than basic life support and emergency aid.

  • They are a member of British Orienteering to the appropriate status, that is:
    • UKCC Level 1 coaches need to be at least a Local Member of British Orienteering
    • UKCC Level 2 coaches and above need to be a National Member of British Orienteering

Only coaches who are licensed to practice will be covered by the British Orienteering public liability insurance policy and able to register and run coaching activities.

However, British Orienteering values all the coaches it has accredited over the years and will provide assistance to all coaches to help them demonstrate the criteria necessary to become a licensed coach.

If you need any further assistance or information about the License Scheme please email the Coaching Department.
