Congratulations on your selection to compete for GBR at the 2018 World Orienteering Championships.

Please tell us...

Who was the first person you told the news to about being selected for the World orienteering Championships?
PH:  "My mum."

What made you choose orienteering over any of the other available sports?
PH:  "I like the variety you get between each race. Every time it is completely different and you get the opportunity to travel to a new area to compete, unlike many other sports. However, one of the best things about it is that being a running sport, I haven’t had to choose between Orienteering and Athletics or Fell running as the training is so similar. I really enjoy all three."

Where is your favourite place to orienteer?
PH:  "Mediterranean old villages and towns with tiny alleys and stairs everywhere."

What is your favourite training session?
PH:  "My favourite hard sessions are threshold runs at around 80% of max effort, where you just lock into a pace and rhythm which is comfortably hard. The most fun days are long easy runs in the hills though."

How are you preparing for the World Championships in August?
PH:  "The two most important things for me to perform well are to be running fast and to be confident on the start line. Of course, I’m training as hard as I can and I’ve recently been on a training camp in Latvia to learn the specifics of how best to tackle the terrain and choose the fastest routes, etc. Doing the latter helps to build my confidence greatly."

Who or what will be your biggest threat?
PH:  "Since mid-May, I’ve had some trouble with an injury I picked up at the British Long Champs. This has forced me to train differently from any previous years in the build-up, so it is a new challenge to arrive on the start line in the shape that I want and with the confidence in my speed that I usually have."

Thank you, Peter. Congratulations again on being selected to compete in the World Orienteering Championships.

We wish you all the best with the rest of your preparation!
