Scotland win the Junior Inter-Regional Championships

All the junior regional squads and coaches travelled to Derbyshire last weekend 29-30th September for the annual Junior-Inter Regional Championships.   Teams in M/W14, 16 and 18 age categories from the nine English regions, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland assembled for the Individual race on Saturday.   This took place on the beautiful Chatsworth estate, combining heather-covered moorland, coniferous plantation, a steep rocky escarpment and an ornamental ruined aqueduct!

The juniors spent Saturday night at the Mount Cook Adventure Centre near Matlock, with over 200 hungry orienteers eating dinner during 4 sittings.

The action continued early on Sunday morning with the relay at Carsington Pastures, near Wirksworth.  Teams of three, several from each region, competed head-to-head, with the first mass start beginning at 9 am.   The open terrain and course planning produced fast and exciting racing, offering spectators excellent views of several controls around the courses.

Scotland won the overall competition, with North-West in second and Yorkshire & Humberside in 3rd.  The most improved region was the South-East, jumping from 7th in 2017 to 4th place.   Although Scotland has won the last seven years, it was not always this, with NWOA, YHOA & SWOA also winners since the competition started in 1989.

Many thanks to the organising clubs and officials from East Midlands for an excellent weekend.
