Yvette Baker Trophy Shield Junior Competitions 2019

The Yvette Baker Junior Regional heats for 2019 recently concluded.

The line-up for the Yvette Baker Trophy / Yvette Baker Shield Final on 7 July 2019 at Sandringham in Norfolk is now clear:

  • Yvette Baker Trophy:

Bristol Orienteering Klub (BOK), Cleveland Orienteering Klub (CLOK), Deeside Orienteering Club (DEE), Humberside and Lincoln Orienteers (HALO), Happy Herts Orienteering Club (HH), Leicestershire Orienteering Club (LEI), Manchester and District Orienteering Club (MDOC), Octavian Droobers (OD), Quantock Orienteers (QO), Southern Navigators (SN), Southdowns Orienteers (SO),
South Ribble Orienteering Club (SROC), South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO), Walton Chasers (WCH), West Anglian orienteering Club (WAOC), West Cumberland Orienteering Club (WCOC).
  • Yvette Baker Shield:

    Harlequins Orienteering Club
(HOC), Lincoln Orienteering Club (LOG), Mole Valley Orienteering Club (MV), Pendle Forest Orienteers (PFO), Essex Stragglers (SOS),
    South Wales Orienteering Club (SWOC).

The heats started in the West Midlands back in January with OD, DEE and HOC qualifying at the PGL Activity Centre at Boreatton Park in Shropshire.   OD won the Trophy heat, while HOC and organising club WRE had a tight battle in the Shield, with HOC winning by just one point!

CLOK took the Trophy heat in the North-East.  In the South-East, SO were determined to reverse last years’ result and beat GO to qualify for the Trophy.  SN qualified as an SCOA club.  Mole Valley did an excellent job to field their first team at Yvette Baker, with five runners helping the club qualify for the Shield final.  It’s a great example of a smaller club giving more young people a chance to compete in a national final.

In East Anglia, Happy Herts, West Anglian and Essex Stragglers (SOS) were worthy qualifiers at Hockley Woods. Three teams competed for the Shield for smaller teams with SOS winning the day.  At Savernake Forest in Wiltshire, BOK & QO qualified from the South West for the Trophy final.

SWOC qualified in the Welsh heat, with little competition.  In YHOA, the strong SYO team cruised through the Trophy heat, but HALO qualified as a second team from this region.  Four teams qualified from the North-West, with MDOC and WCOC tying in the Trophy, SROC picking up another place and PFO qualifying in the Shield.

Finally, DVO organised the East Midlands heat on 19th May appropriately during World Orienteering Week, with teams competing at Calke Abbey in beautiful parkland.   WCH just pipped LEI in a tight race for the Trophy, but both could qualify.  Lincoln OG qualified for the Shield.

During World Orienteering Week, it is appropriate to remember Yvette Baker herself, the inspiration behind the junior competition held each year.   Amongst her many successes at an elite level, Yvette won the Women’s Short Distance race at the 1999 World Championships, held in Scotland in 1999.

A new website for the Yvette Baker Trophy & Shield www.britishorienteering.org.uk/yvettebaker has been set up.  It will be updated each year to make the whole series easier to follow.
