British Orienteering Welcomes National Coaching Week

Today sees the launch of National Coaching week and British Orienteering will be getting involved to celebrate our coaches across the country.

This week we’ll be sharing articles highlighting just what makes coaching great, along with various videos from the very successful national coaching conference that took place earlier this year.

Commenting on coaching week, British Orienteering’s CEO Peter Hart said;
"Coaching is much more than organising a set of training sessions – it is about connecting and communicating with them as people first and orienteers second.

It is about being passionate about the sport of orienteering and transmitting your passion for the sport to those that you are working with.

It is about empathy, making every orienteer feel important.

It is about integrity and consistency, especially with young people, during good times and bad.

It is about being a role model and setting the behaviour standards you expect from your athletes.

It is about being a teacher, not only the technical aspects of orienteering, but about life, about optimism, about persistence, and about character.

Coaching is a complex role but gives you and those orienteers you work with huge rewards."

Frequently you change lives.

Get involved

Coaching week happens to fall at the same time as national volunteering week so you can also play your part in joining in saying thank you to all the coaches and volunteers across the country. You can get involved on social media by using the hashtag #volunteersweek whilst also going the extra mile to say thank you at any events or coaching session you’re attending.

We’d also like to see a mini-takeover of social media with messages and photos of the coaches and volunteers that have supported you in any way as a coach or club volunteer. Make sure you use the hashtag #volunteersweek and tag @britishorienteering on Facebook into your post throughout the week.
