NGOC 50 Weekend – 18 and 19 January 2020

North Gloucestershire Orienteering Club is 50 in 2020.

North Gloucestershire Orienteering Club (NGOC) has outlived the college from which it derives its name, but it still has members who joined way back then, or not long after.

NGOC are delighted to invite you to a weekend of great orienteering in the Forest of Dean, on the 18 and 19 of January 2020 as part of their celebrations.

The weekend includes:

Day 1:  Saturday 18 January - Knockalls Enclosure for a National level middle distance race.

Day 2:  Sunday 19 January - return to Lightning Tree Hill for the first time since January 2000. The area was used for the 1989 British Championships, and various later large events, but forestry work and undergrowth took over at the turn of the century, and it is only now that the club  feels it ready for re-use for this National level classic long race.

Assistant Organiser Hilary Nicholls (NGOC), says: “2020 is NGOC’s 50th year anniversary and what better way to start celebrations than welcoming  fellow orienteers from all over the country to Knockalls and Lightning Tree ….and during the month that NGOC was born all those years ago!”

Hilary continues: “We are so lucky to have the beautiful Forest of Dean with its varied terrain, contours, mix of vegetation, as well as historical workings, all of which contribute to complex areas (not) to get lost in.”

“You may be interested to see we have been investigating the club's history including early maps of our local areas, and we have created an interactive timeline of the Forest of Dean have a look here."

“We do hope you will join us in a couple of weeks’ time… and Happy New Year!"

Entry prices go up on Sunday 5th January – enter here on Fabian4.

On Fabian, you can also buy a ticket to the Birthday Local Social at 6pm on the Saturday night – where else can you relax discussing maps, courses and routes over a pint, buffet and a piece of birthday cake?!  All ages and abilities welcome.
