2020 British Orienteering Night Championships

Report by John Dalton member of Thames Valley Orienteering Club (TVOC), Organiser of 2020 British Orienteering Night Championships.

The British Orienteering Night Championships are being held on Saturday 22 February at Hambleden, near Henley-on-Thames on the Buckinghamshire/Oxfordshire border.

Entries close at midnight on Sunday 16 February.  There will be no late entries, or Entry on the Day for this Major Level “A” night event.  Enter now!

Hambleden has never been used for a night event, though it has been the venue for a few high-profile events over the last 10 years.  The Southern Championships were held there in 2011, and two days of the JK in 2013 were hosted on this private estate.

Hambleden Estate

Planner, Neville Baker, explained:
“This is an outstanding area for orienteering.  We are in classic Chiltern Hills terrain, with undulating slopes covered in mature beech or mixed deciduous and conifer. Any fields are in-bounds, and the limited path network and valley shapes make for a wide variety of challenging route choices in this large estate.  Brashings and undergrowth are very limited, meaning fast times for those who can navigate at speed.”

The Organiser, John Dalton from TVOC, said:
“The Hambleden Estate provides everything we need all in one location.  There is a very large grass field providing all the car parking we could need.  There is plenty of space nearby for catering and traders.  We are providing a marquee to make an under-cover event centre.  The distances to starts and finishes are all very short.  Even basic camping facilities are being laid on for those wanting to stay over for the Chiltern Challenge being held the next day. We look forward to welcoming you to Hambelden.”

TVOC ‘s annual flagship event, the Chiltern Challenge is also being held at Hambleden on the following morning, the 23 February.  This National Level “B” event will feature a full range of courses, from White to Black.  Enter both events for a discount!
