Sharing and Discussing Club Experiences Webinar - 20 October, 7.30-8.45pm

British Orienteering are pleased to invite you to a webinar on Tuesday evening next week.  This webinar is focused on bringing clubs together to talk about their club examples of how they have managed the return to orienteering, and to provide an opportunity to discuss and share experiences and ask questions.

Firstly, British Orienteering will provide a quick snapshot of the national picture.

Ric Gamble (NI Development Officer) and Natalie Weir (England Development Officer) will give us the exciting latest national picture from events, activities, and permanent and virtual orienteering course activity up until the end of September 2020.

The focus will be a chance to hear about club examples from experiences of returning to traditional events to keeping it completely virtual.

There will be a selection of club speakers you can hear from, ask questions, and get inspired by on this webinar.

  • Jon Eaton (WCOC) will talk about how keeping it simple and being flexible with areas has enabled them to restart traditional Thursday evening orienteering events and how they have adapted procedures such as entry and arrangements. Members of 14 other British Orienteering clubs have already taken part in the series, in addition to a good turnout from WCOC members.
  • Jason Falconer (WSX) saw members being kept engaged throughout June – August 2020 with a series of weekly MapRun courses in partnership with WIM.  Jason will join us to talk about the experience of delivering their first big traditional event post lockdown –at Goldlingston and Agglestone Heaths (a National Trust site).
  • Colin Dickson (BAOC) will take us through the logistics and organisation of a series of Military League South events, the experience of managing large numbers and two or three start lanes, as well as adapting planning requirements for multiple courses and social distancing in the current climate.
  • Phill Batts (CLOK) will talk about his experience of converting completely to MapRun this season – from not having any experience of virtual courses and experimenting with various methodologies from using from purple pen to google earth, and how a small team of volunteers have helped make it happen.
  • Martyn Roome (SROC) will inform on how the club avoided coming to a complete grinding halt by quickly learning about virtual orienteering courses.  Martyn will talk about setting up a small group in the club to test run and comment on how the test courses worked, and rolling these out, opting for Maprun events in our best technical areas, which can be done any time over a two-week period.
  • Juls Hanvey (Sporting Clubs Coordinator – NI) will give us an overview of an LVO October Outdoors project - 4 weeks of adventurous orienteering challenges across 3 boroughs supported by The Outdoor Partnership NI and delivered via virtual courses.  Juls will also talk about how virtual courses can be used as a brilliant tool to engage newcomers.
  • Natalie Weir (British Orienteering) will outline some additional inspiring examples – for example how DVO have set up Maprun courses on 17 different areas using a mix of OpenOrienteering maps and conventional ISOM orienteering maps using a mixture of linear and score courses.  Natalie will also give an overview of the current Transport for London Photo- O Challenge project in partnership with SLOW and LOK.

We hope you can join us on the night - register here.
