Great Britain team - Cecilie Andersen, Ralph Street, Jonathan Crickmore, Charlotte Ward - have won bronze in the Sprint Relay at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham Alabama. 

Last weekend (15 - 17 July) saw the 11^th edition of the World Games held in Birmingham, Alabama, following the last games held in Poland in 2017.

Ralph Street was the only returning athlete and was joined by Jonathan Crickmore, Cecilie Andersen, and a member of the World Orienteering Championships silver medal Relay team Charlotte Ward.

The World Games is an 11-day multi-sport event, held every four years and recognised by the International Olympic Committee and includes sports that are not contested in the Olympic Games and also saw the first International Orienteering event on American soil in more than 20 years.

The events which took place were the Individual Sprint, Middle, and Mixed Sprint Relay. With the World Orienteering Championships less than a month ago, two of the silver medal relay team were back in action and hungry to capitalise on the performance in Denmark and hoping to finish higher than their 5th place in 2017.

In a thrilling Sprint Relay held in central Birmingham, the race saw Denmark, Switzerland, and Sweden favourites for the medal set out on a fast pace on the first two Legs, with Matthias Kyburz (Switzerland), Kasper Harlem Fosser (Norway), and Martin Regborn (Sweden) create what looked to be a decisive lead and Great Britain nearly a minute behind in 4th place.  However, Karolin Ohlsson (Sweden) made a mistake nearing the end of the course and Charlotte Ward (Great Britain) kept her cool to cross the finish line in bronze medal position.

Cecilie Andersen (Great Britain) had a great few days of competition, finishing 12th in the Middle and 14th in the Individual Sprint with Charlotte Ward (Great Britain) finishing in 17th.

In the men’s Ralph Street (Great Britain) once again secured a top 10 finish in the Individual Sprint finishing in 8th position and Jonathan Crickmore (Great Britain) 23rd.  In the Middle Jonny and Ralph finished 22nd and 29th respectively.

The team will hopefully have enjoyed the experience at a multi-sport competition, and the closing ceremony, with the next International event European Orienteering Championships in a few weeks' time.  The Great Britain squad is to be named shortly.
