British Orienteering celebrates Volunteers’ Week 2023

2023 marks the 39th year of Volunteers’ Week (1–7 June), when British Orienteering will join thousands of charities and voluntary organisations recognising the contribution volunteers make across the UK.

With this year’s theme of ‘Celebrate and Inspire’ we hope to encourage people to be the change that we want to see and get involved in volunteering in whatever way works for them.

The contribution of volunteers within orienteering is often unseen and unrecognised by many, visible only through the incredible impact of their volunteering, so taking the time during Volunteers’ Week to celebrate their efforts and all they contribute to our local communities, the voluntary sector and society as a whole has never been more important.

What do our volunteers do?

Whether its running local, national or major events across their region or Country, planning map routes, to holding a key position within their local orienteering club – volunteer orienteers are the life and breath of orienteering. They keep our sport going, creating more opportunities for local communities to come together and experience the adventure and challenge collectively.

Every year, British Orienteering proudly recognises the great work clubs and individuals provide in our sport through our Annual Club, Coach and Volunteer Awards, you can view the 2022 winners here.

How can I get involved in volunteering?

It’s easy to misjudge how much effort clubs and event planners put in to hosting orienteering events, which is why having a bank of volunteers is so important. So why not consider reaching out to your local club or association and offering to lend them a hand at the next event? Alternatively, you can offer your skills and support elsewhere behind the scenes, whether it is helping to update the club website, to posting on social media.

There are plenty of opportunities for everyone to get involved. So, join the volunteering community today, help us spread the word about why orienteering is such a fantastic sport to be a part of and show your support!
