The Yvette Baker 2019 final took place last weekend at Sandringham Country Park in Norfolk. Sandringham is an excellent venue for junior orienteering, having hosted a number of club and schools competitions over the years. This year the weather cooperated with pleasant conditions – unlike the scorching temperatures at the final last year!
South Yorkshire Orienteers continued their recent strong junior performances, winning the Trophy for the third successive year. Essex Stragglers won the Shield competition for clubs with fewer juniors. Five clubs entered the Shield this year, enabling more juniors to take part in this annual festival of junior orienteering.
Mole Valley is a great example of a club that pulled out all the stops to enter the Shield. They recruited their team, but with a few days to go, they were unsure they could make the journey! They needed an extra driver, and thankfully the last minute offer was secured from a willing parent.
Grateful thanks go to East Anglia Orienteering Association for organising this year's final. The Yvette Baker final next year will be held in the South West, organised by Bristol Orienteering Klub, on Sunday 5th July 2020.
