Orienteers head to South Wales for the JK – the first one for three years!

This Easter weekend, the Jan Kjellström International Festival of Orienteering 2022, South Wales

15th April - 18th April

This is the first JK back for three years!

Orienteers navigate their way to South Wales for the return of the much-awaited JK Festival of Orienteering Day 1 today (Friday 15 April) and will start the four-day long weekend off with the Sprint race at the University of Swansea in Singleton Park.

The Welsh Orienteering Association looks forward to welcoming all competitors to the first day of this exciting orienteering over the Easter weekend!

Swansea University is set in rolling parkland overlooking the majestic sweep of Swansea Bay. The terrain comprises Swansea University's Singleton campus as well as the ornamental gardens and open parkland of Singleton Park.

The area is set on a gentle slope and has a good mix of old and new buildings, and landscaped areas and the ornamental garden features an intricate path network.

Sprint PreO will also be taking place. This will take place at Singleton Park alongside the Sprint competition and will be in the form of an A/Z PreO Sprint.

Who will be crowned the JK Sprint Champions of 2022?

Don't forget and please join us!
The British Orienteering Volunteer and Mapping Awards Presentation is taking place today at the assembly at 16:30, immediately before the Day 1 Medal Ceremony for the races.

The rest of the weekend's programme this year, is as follows...

On Saturday Day 2 (16 April), the event will head off to Clydach Terrace for the Middle distance race.

Clydach Terrace is located on the edge of the breathtaking Brecon Beacons National Park. It is situated to the north of Brynmawr and Ebbw Vale, at the head of the valleys. Similar to Pwll Ddu, it consists of fast, open moorland terrain lying between 400 m and 500 m with complex contour details resulting from open ex-industrial workings.

A fine area for orienteering.

PreO will also be taking place - so an ideal opportunity to find out more about this discipline.

---

Then on Day 3 (Easter Sunday 17 April) the event will continue and go to Pwll Du where competitors will compete in the Long-distance race

Pwll Du is located to the southwest of Abergavenny and to the north of Blaenavon in the borough of Torfaen. It consists of open upland terrain lying between 400 m and 500 m on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The technical challenge here was created by a vast amount of historic surface mining (coal and limestone), which has left a legacy of intricate contour detail.

Please note...
