Why every runner counts! CompassSport Cup Heat success for Octavian Droobers

9 March 2026

At the recent CompassSport Cup Heats there was a lot of excitement for one of our clubs. Octavian Droobers qualified second in a very dramatic Heat with the help of their last Droober runner. Keith Willdig summarises the excitement witnessed from the sidelines.

It is 1.30pm, all the fast girls and guys have just finished

Club positions have been changing in the last half hour but that is probably it. No fast runners left out in the forest

The CS Cup positions are incredibly tight

Top 4 teams (3 to qualify) separated by 9 points with OD in 4th

1.45 – still the same position

Everyone thinks that it is over

Clubs start to leave

2.00 Still the same, just 3 competitors still out, everyone waiting to wrap up

14.10 – the last Droober runner comes in

Running time of 2hrs 20 mins

Only 2 people behind her on her course

The longest time taken by any Droober

We then find she is 15th on a lowly populated course

So she scores 86 points replacing the previous last counting Droober on 79 points

Pretty well everyone has left but OD jumps up 7 points and qualifies 2nd

A very real demonstration that every runner counts.

Great for the sport, great for an inexperienced competitor and a real demonstration of inclusivity.
