110 Kilometres, 12 Legs, 1 Epic Day: Orienteers Run Rings Around Manchester

2 September 2025

On Sunday 20th July 2025, nineteen runners from MDOC, SELOC, and DEE took part in a unique orienteering relay around Manchester’s M60 ring road.

The event, known as the “M60 O-Ringen,” was designed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Manchester & District Orienteering Club with a fittingly themed challenge: twelve MapRun scatter score legs arranged like a clockface, forming a continuous circuit of over 110 kilometres. Starting at 7am from Sale Water Park—chosen for its proximity to the post-event gathering spot—the relay unfolded with precision, each leg beginning on the hour to maintain momentum and ensure smooth transitions.

Organiser Marie Roberts explained that the hourly start system was key to keeping the schedule on track, even when some legs took longer than anticipated. A dedicated WhatsApp group kept participants and supporters engaged throughout the day, sharing updates, photos, and words of encouragement. From navigating concert crowds in Heaton Park to adapting control sites at short notice, the day presented logistical challenges that were met with resourcefulness and good humour. The final leg concluded just before sunset, with runners and supporters gathering at Jackson’s Boat pub to celebrate the achievement in the evening sunshine.

Originally devised during the COVID-19 pandemic as a solo challenge, the M60 O-Ringen has evolved into a collaborative and celebratory event that showcases the camaraderie and adventurous spirit of the orienteering community. With plans already in place for a follow-up relay on 6th July 2026—this time as a North West inter-club challenge—the legacy of this anniversary event looks set to continue. The M60 O-Ringen legs remain live on the MapRun app, offering orienteers the chance to explore Manchester’s green spaces and urban trails at their own pace.
