Courses

Course description:Terrain: Ashton Plantation forest has many paths, some unmarked. Off-path undergrowth varies in runnability. There are some areas of rocky ground and crags. Longer courses travel through some areas of open field (cows may be present) into an area of forested mining terrain, with many rock and contour features. Paths and steep slopes will be muddy and slippery- leg protection and grippy shoes are strongly advised. Map: • 1:7,500 scale with 5m contours. • Drawn by Jamie Hayward in 2021. • Waterproof size A4 with courses overprinted. • Loose control descriptions will also be available. Newcomers are advised to familiarise themselves with uncrossable features and out of bounds symbols (if in doubt, there will be people to ask at the village hall and Start). Features marked as ‘High Fences/ High Walls’, must not be crossed. Doing so could risk our permissions for future events and will result in disqualification. The woodland is home to several stands of huge redwoods. Where these are individually distinct, they are marked as such. Where they are clumped together, and have minimal effect on navigation or runnability, they are included in the generic ‘forest run/walk’ shading. There has been some forestry clearance and work since the map was drawn. Courses avoid these areas, but be mindful that working forests can change at any time with no notice.
