Courses

Course description:For this event, a Red course is offered specifically aimed at runners with no orienteering experience, or less experienced orienteers wanting a longer run. The course remains on paths and offers straightforward navigation - think of it as a Parkrun combined with a treasure hunt! Course length is along the expected route. The shorter courses (White and Yellow) are suitable for beginners, as is the Red course for those comfortable with the longer distance. Due to the complex path network the White and Yellow course will use smiley faces to assist the competitors where there are many paths at junctions. Help & advice, particularly for anyone unfamiliar with orienteering maps, will be available on the day at Assembly/Registration. Mixed woodland with small areas of complex old quarry workings and a large open area near the Tyndale Monument. The path network is extensive, with additional complexity from the numerous mountain bike tracks in the woods. The bike tracks are in the main mapped, however new ones appear regularly and may not be shown. Runnability is variable with some areas of brambles and brashings that may be best avoided. Slopes around the edge of the escarpment are steep and may be slippery. Ruined fences (some with barbed wire) are present and may be difficult to see on the ground. Grippy footwear is recommended and full leg cover is compulsory. Significant forestry work has been undertaken in some areas of the map, in addition to downed trees from storm damage. Courses are designed to avoid the most heavily affected area and this is marked as out of bounds. Old London Road is out of bounds on all courses. Map: 1:7,500 scale with 5m contours. Drawn by Paul Gebbett in 2022, with selective updates in 2024/5. Waterproof size A3 with courses overprinted. Loose control descriptions will be available at the start Large and/or distinct Rootstocks are mapped with a Green Cross. Only large or distinct hides (mapped with a Black Cross) are mapped.
