Courses

Course description:Map: Scale 1:7,500 with 5m contours, updated in 2026 by Quentin Hardling from earlier versions Terrain: The Downs offers a mix of open parkland and small wooded areas, providing varied challenges for orienteering. Most courses run through flat, open grassland with scattered trees and bushes. Longer courses enter a wooded valley with steeper slopes and rougher terrain. Shoes with good grip are essential here, especially after rain. For shorter courses, trainers are suitable unless it's wet. This diverse terrain makes The Downs ideal for all skill levels. The Blue course crosses several 20 mph roads. Please take plenty of time to ensure you cross these roads only when it is safe to do so. The Light Green, Short Green, Red and Green courses cross one road twice (at the same location). Due to the participation of U16s, this crossing point will be marshalled. Competitors should please follow the marshals’ instructions and take great care. The shorter courses (Orange and below) cross no roads. Juniors (U16) can run on any course except Blue. Control descriptions will be printed on the maps with loose descriptions available at the start (pictorial versions for the longer courses and written descriptions for Orange, Yellow, White & Newcomer courses).
