Armagh Sprint Weekend off to a flying start

Personal bests galore for British Orienteering at the Armagh International Road Races.

The Armagh Sprint weekend started with personal bests galore last night. The event, that is being held in conjunction with the well-established Armagh International Road Races began with some of the world's best sprint orienteers lining up with some of the world's best road runners in the event that is run around the 1km Mall in Armagh City, Northern Ireland.

After a string of children's races, the international programme began with a women's 3km event where Alice Leake and Fanni Gyurko stormed around the three laps to finish with times of 10:00 and 10:11 respectively. In this race where 29 women ran faster than 10 minutes, Fanni finished in 30th position and Alice ran a very strong last lap to storm home in 35th.

The men were off next for their five laps of the course in a packed field where 77 runners ran faster than 15 minutes!  First home for orienteering was Kris Jones who finished an amazing 5th overall with a new best time of 14:03. Dane Blomquist, in his first year as a senior, also smashed his best time with a very impressive 14:32.  Next for the Brits was Murray Strain in 14:41 and then Chris Smithard storming through the 15 minute barrier in 14:56.  Jonny Crickmore and Will Gardner who ran almost head-to-head for the entire race finished with personal bests of 15:15 and 15:17 respectively.  Next in was Nathan Lawson who was delighted to go under 16 minutes in 15:58 and Oliver Williams came home in 16:13.

Yannick Michiels (Belgium), who had first got orienteering noticed at this event when he ran a brave race last year to be just pipped into second place, didn't quite find his 2016 form this year and was disappointed to finish 13th in 14:14. Øystein Østerbø, of Norway, gave Chris Smithard a good race to finish just ahead of him in 14:50 and Tim Robertson of New Zealand finished 122nd in 15:28.

Will Rigg was next to race in the 3km and after setting himself a goal of 9:30, hit it spot on for 31st position.
