With British Orienteering turning 50 on June 17 it was only fitting that the celebrations started on the first day of one the biggest orienteering festivals in the orienteering calendar.

The Jan Kjellstrom Festival of Orienteering took place over the Easter weekend and started with the Sprint at Brunel University London on Good Friday. Once the racing had finished and the bustling university campus simmered to a quiet murmur of univerity students, the day finished with British Orienteering's 36th Annual General Meeting in the University's Lecture Centre.

Whilst many of the days participants set off to recharge for day two of the four day festival at Ambersham Common, 48 members turned out to listen to the Chair of British Orienteering, Judith Holt, talk about the celebrations that are in place for the 50th Anniversary.  Judith highlighted that there is a short film and special edition of Focus planned which will highligh the history and the future of British Orienteering.

Judith then continued: "Over the 50 years, thousands of orienteers all over the UK, in each of the English regions, in Northern Ireland, in Scotland and in Wales, have contributed countless volunteer hours to organising, planning and controlling events, to running our clubs and Associations and not least to the many different facets of running the National Governing Body, British Orienteering. It is an appropriate time, on our Golden Jubilee, to recognise and thank them all for their contributions in making our sport in this land the highly developed and sophisticated sport that it now is.

In doing this, I would like to pick out one person who is in the room today who was in right at the beginning 50 years ago, and is still today Chairman of one of our Committees, having it seems done almost everything including holding the office of British Orienteering Federation Chairman, many years ago, on the way. He has even taught a lot of orienteers how to Scottish dance! I would like to ask Chris James, North Gloucestershire Orienteering Club to stand up as a representative of all these volunteers over all these years, and undertake one new task – that of cutting our anniversary cake."

Judith's full speech on the day can be viewed on Facebook here.

The formal business of the AGM then continued.
