European Youth Orienteering Championship 2017

Thursday 29 June – Sunday 2 July 2017 Slovakia, Banská Bystrica

The GB junior squad are making their way out from Manchester to Bratislava later today, as they begin their final preparations for this weekend's European Youth Orienteering Championships, taking place in Slovakia. The team will be making the most of the model training opportunities in Banska Bystrica tomorrow, with sprint in the morning and long/relay in the afternoon, before relaxing ahead of the first race on Friday, a sprint around the small hillside town of Banska Stiavnica. The long and relay races in the heavily contoured forest of Mutno will follow on Saturday and Sunday.

Making their GB debuts will be the trio of Scots: Eilidh Campbell (W16); Finlay Todd (M18) and Freddie Carcas (M18), who have spent their first year in the Talent squad, preparing for this moment. Of the rest of the squad, all competed last year at the 2017 EYOC in Poland and they will be keen to build on their successes there. Alastair Thomas (M18) and Grace Molloy (W18) both had top 20 performances in the forest a year ago and then capped their weekend off with podium finishes in the sprint.

They will be hoping for more of the same this year, but with the Swedes and Norwegians now joining their class, the challenge to repeat this feat will be that touch harder. Lucy Haines (W18) and Laura King (W18) both managed top 20 results in the forest and sprint respectively last year and will be hoping to build on this achievement this time round. Laura also had a 4th place in the sprint at JEC last autumn and is tantalisingly close to a medal in this discipline.

British Orienteering wishes the team all the best for the weekend ahead.
