British Orienteering Championships 2018

British Orienteering Championships 2018 is one of three major events taking place on the weekend of the Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 May 2018.  In a double bill for the Royal Family, Harry and Meghan are getting married and the Long Distance Championships are taking place at Balmoral. The FA Cup Final has been moved to the evening to avoid any possible clash with the British Orienteering Championships.

The terrain and scenery around Balmoral is exceptional, and many of you who were at last year’s Scottish 6 Days in Royal Deeside took the chance for a quick look at the estate.  Planner Steve Nicholson and Controller Brian Bullen have planned fair but demanding courses, and there is the added bonus of the Adventure Show filming the race for a production to be screened on BBC.  Balmoral is just upriver from Ballater, and on the Sunday there is the chance to run in the fast and open area of Torphantrick (Inchmarnoch Estate) by a bend in the River Dee a few miles downstream.  If these two races are not enough there is an informal Sprint race in Ballater on the Friday evening and a chance to take part in the British Trail Orienteering Championships at Crathes Castle on the Sunday. With sunset in this part of Scotland not sue till after 21:30 hrs there is time to explore and enjoy local sights.

The following weekend (Saturday 26 - Sunday 27 May) the Scottish Orienteering Championships will be staged at Achagour and Dulsie near Nairn followed by the Relays in popular Roseisle on the Moray Coast.  In the intervening period, there is an opportunity to run around the seasonal orienteering course at Glenmore Lodge and the new Permanent Orienteering Course about to open at Linn of Dee.  A number of Maprun courses have also been set up in the area and maps can be made available for other training opportunities.
