Throughout the summer holidays British Orienteering has been working with the local National Autistic group in Rochdale to bring orienteering to families and children with the condition for the first time.
Each Wednesday British Orienteering's Rob Bishop and Peter Brooke have organised Xplorer routes for children in Heaton Park.
Rob Bishop explains the purpose behind the Xplorer events. "Too often summer provision isn't suitable for children with autism and therefore it can be really difficult for families to find anything to do in the summer. This is even more difficult if you have children with and without the condition. The beauty of Orienteering is it allows the whole family to take part together, getting outside, exploring the park and having fun together."
British Orienteering engaged with over 20 families through the summer programme and we will continue to look for ways to work with people with the condition and their families. The inaugural sessions have been warmly received by families that took part, Naomi and her family came from the Wirral for the free sessions and explained how the sessions had given the family a "stress free family day out."
Samantha whose son is pictured enjoyed Xplorer in Heaton Park this week despite the rain. Samantha contacted British Orienteering later to explain how her son was proudly showing off his certificate to his Dad and telling him all about his day.
