It was great to see so many orienteers competing in the Original Mountain Marathon (OMM) last weekend (26-27 Oct2019).

Congratulations to both Graham and Hector on their win.

The race for second was much harder fought with only minutes splitting second to fifth place.  In the end Alistair Masson (INT) and Tim Morgan hung on to take second overall pushing Dark Peak Runners Tom Saville and Nathan Lawson (OD) into third.

Not familiar with the OMM, what’s the challenge?

Day 1:
On the start line each competitor and their partner will receive a map of your chosen course. Both competitors must then plan a route to visit the marked checkpoints spread across the 400Km2 course area and both finish at the overnight wild camp on Day 1.  Competitors are expected to use their understanding of the terrain and conditions they’re heading into and make appropriate kit decisions and route choices accordingly. This includes the unsupported overnight wild camp.

Day 2: Competitors receive a new map and choose a second route back to the Event Centre. The teams who visit the most checkpoints in the quickest time are the winners.

The Original Mountain Marathon was created in 1968 to allow those who love the mountains an opportunity to test their abilities.

The fundamentals of the event are self-reliance, route selection, moving quickly over difficult terrain, kit management, endurance, teamwork and sound mountain judgement.

The OMM is the UK’s biggest mountain race has shaped the UK outdoor community for 50 years. Since 1968 the UK’s greatest running legends, product creators and influential people have stood on the start line. The OMM’s ethos a taking responsibility for your actions in our wild spaces continues to be passed down the generations.
