Development Statement

During this unprecedented time, British Orienteering would like to thank all the orienteers across the country for their support in cancelling their events and activities. These decisions are not easy, and we all truly feel for the volunteers who have put in many hours of work in order to provide the high-quality events  that can now not take place, or at least for the foreseeable future.

It’s been very pleasing to see the orienteering community coming together with various ideas to support each other and how people can still enjoy the sport.  We must emphasise though that we all need to ensure that we follow the government advice, however tempting it may be to plan a virtual course and encourage other members to try it out.  We must avoid unnecessary  travel and contact at this current time.

This is a constantly evolving situation and we will let people know as soon as restrictions can be reviewed.

At British Orienteering, the entire staff have been working hard to look at various ways in which we can support members and clubs during this time.  Over the next couple of weeks, our team will be contacting all clubs to answer questions and see if there is anything we can directly  support  you with.

Additionally, in the coming days and weeks, we’ll be publishing orienteering based support materials and activities which parents can use at home with their children.  We’ll also have a dedicated page on our website where resources will be free to download and added too at regular intervals.

We are also pleased to offer our webinar platform free of charge for clubs to use to deliver training sessions or committee meetings safely online to your members. Likewise, we intend to deliver a series of webinars to help clubs plan for getting back out in the forests with ideas and suggestions of what can be done from home. If you also have a training session that could be delivered online nationally, then do get in touch.

Don’t forget we also have 14 recorded webinars on our YouTube channel which you can review at any time at home. Why not learn that new skill you’d always wanted to? How about learning to plan your first local event?

Finally, we would like to emphasise that our team are here to help, should you have a question you’d like to discuss please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

On behalf of all the team at British Orienteering, thank you for your patience, stay safe and Orienteering will be back stronger than ever.
