Looking Back at 2020: Overview Snapshot - from the month of January 2020

The Development Conference was enjoyed by many!

“One of the best and most relevant conferences I’ve ever attended.” is how one member described the 2020 National Development Conference.

Held at the YHA National Forest over two days on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 January 2020, members from clubs across the country heard presentations and took part in workshops covering some crucial areas key to helping clubs with their development.

One of the key highlights from the weekend was hearing from Gold medal winner elite athlete Grace Molloy member of Forth Valley Orienteers (FVO).  Grace gave a fascinating insight into her journey from starting orienteering to linking up with Kalevan Rasti Club in Finland and provided her thoughts on what clubs could do going forward to support young athletes.

50 years old - time for celebrations in 2020!

Several of our clubs were formed in 1970, and so are celebrating their 50th year in existence this year.

The first to do so has been North Gloucestershire Orienteering Club (NGOC) celebrating with two days of events, ‘NGOC 50’, in the Forest of Dean on the 18 and 19 January.

Assistant Organiser Hilary Nicholls (NGOC), says: “2020 is NGOC’s 50th year anniversary and what better way to start celebrations than welcoming fellow orienteers from all over the country to Knockalls and Lightning Tree ….and during the month that NGOC was born all those years ago!”

As well as NGOC, British Orienteering archive received history enquiries from Swansea Bay Orienteering Club and the Welsh Orienteering Association, Poole Orienteering Club, Wimborne Orienteers, Leicestershire Orienteering Club and Suffolk Orienteering Club.

Poole Orienteering Club is no longer (now part of WESSEX); likewise, another club founded in 1970, East Yorkshire Orienteering Club, is now incorporated into Humberside and Lincoln Orienteers (HALO).  Read more here.

Guildford Orienteers hosted Middle Distance UK Orienteering League Event of 2020 on Sunday 26 January.

“GO's Middle Distance Event in January at Farley Heath in Surrey (nicknamed the "Fairly Far Farley") attracted over 400 runners, which came as a bit of a (nice) surprise.” said Event Organiser and GO Chair Jeremy Wilde.

The club decided to ask one of their GO Juniors to act as planner, so Adam Conway stepped up to the task. He did a great job, updating the map as well as selecting, checking and tagging all the control sites, and coordinating the setting out and collecting in of the controls.
