Suspension of Competitions Activities in Tier 4 areas in England - updated 24 December 2020

Having reviewed the relevant legislation and government guidance, British Orienteering are now able to provide further detail on the restrictions that will apply to orienteering in areas of England that are subject to Tier 4.

Events and Activities in Tier 4 areas

All orienteering events and activities are suspended within Tier 4 areas, other than organised activities (e.g. coaching) for under-18s or people with a disability.

Activities in Tier 4 areas for under-18s or people with a disability

Any organised activities for under-18s or people with a disability which take place in a Tier 4 area must be held in an outdoor public place. The organiser of the activity must carry out a risk assessment and take precautions in line with the British Orienteering coaching guidance. People who live outside a Tier 4 area should not travel into a Tier 4 area to participate in or volunteer at such an activity. Spectators are not permitted at such activities, and parents of the participants are not permitted to participate in the activity themselves.

Travelling out of a Tier 4 area

People who live in a Tier 4 area must not travel out of their area to participate in or volunteer at an orienteering event or activity.

Individual exercise and recreation

For those living in a Tier 4 area, unlimited outdoor exercise is still permitted, including in parks and the countryside. This exercise must be alone, or in a public outdoor place with your household, support bubble, or one other person. Exercise should be done locally wherever possible, but you can travel a short distance within your Tier 4 area to do so if necessary (for example, to access an open space).
