Board of British Orienteering are seeking an Independent Director responsible for diversity safeguarding

British Orienteering has a vacancy on the Board of Directors for an Independent Director with the responsibility of diversity & safeguarding as well as the other normal director responsibilities.

We have a great depth of experience and expertise on the Board, from within orienteering and other sports including corporate backgrounds.

The Board, together we are passionate about the future for orienteering. We are excited to find a new board director to join our team who will share our ambitions, deliver the strategy, and grow the sport.

Overview of the role

Main Duties and Responsibilities

An Independent Director should bring innovation, skills and expertise that will drive forward the strategic agenda of the Board. There should be a constructive challenge of proposals so that decisions made by the Board achieve the best outcome.

An independent director must balance the need to remain independent of the operational day-to-day business of the sport while maintaining a level of knowledge that will enable them to ask tough, objective questions.

They should be able to scrutinise operational and financial performance to be satisfied as to the integrity of management information. Specifically, an Independent Director must be able to scrutinise, assess and constructively challenge financial controls and risk management systems to ensure they are robust and defensible.

Definition of Independent

Independent - a person is independent if they are free from any close connection to the organisation such as a member of a British Orienteering committee or Association committee or held a post as an officer in a club in the last three years.

A person may still be deemed to be ‘independent’ even if they are a member of British Orienteering and take part in orienteering activities.
