Over the weekend, there were two days of International Competition at the second round of the Orienteering World Cup, in Sweden.

Saturday saw the Middle distance race take place in wet conditions and it proved to be tricky to make a clean run in the terrain at Gränjåsen and Gränjesåsvallen for everybody. Swedish Junior Hanna Lundberg showed both her technical and physical skills to take the win, and after starting the first out of 102 women. She remained in the leader position on the sofa for the whole of the race, watching competitor after competitor failing to beat her time.

Jo Shepherd was the highest placed British athlete in the Women's Middle distance race in 36th position.

Jo says:  "It was really fun, and I ran quite well in the early part of the race. I lost a bit of time on the mistakes in the middle and latter part of the course but now I've analysed what I needed to do differently."

Fiona Bunn was making her Senior World Cup debut and finished in 86th position. Fiona says: "My senior debut was a tough one for sure. I don't feel like I did myself justice and definitely felt the effect of a lack in racing recently, The terrain and course were incredible though and it was a great opportunity to generate some learning."

In the men's, there were big changes throughout the race with the winner in the end being Joey Hadorn (SUI). Ralph Street was the highest placed British male in the race in 29th position.  Ralph says:  "I ran a good race until halfway so that is good to see after the disappointment of the World Orienteering Championships Middle distance."

The Swedish junior Hanna Lundberg took her first World Cup victory after a perfect race when many of the favourites made big mistakes. Joey Hadorn, Switzerland, won the very tight men’s class, only three seconds ahead of Daniel Hubmann.

On Sunday was the final day of the competition with the Relay's taking place. There were two team competitions, the Men's Relay and a Women's Relay with each Relay having 3 Legs each. All teams started at the same time in a mass start and the courses were forked so that competitors that run the same Leg may have different controls, but after all three Legs all teams have ran the same course in total.

In the Women's Relay the GB team of Grace Molloy, Fiona Bunn and Megan Carter- Davies finished in 15th position, with the team of Jo Shepherd, Cecilie Andersen and Lauran King in 19th.

In the Men's the team of Nathan Lawson, Chris Smithard, and Josh Dudley finished in 24th position.

Sweden came away with the victories in both the men’s and women’s Relays, which concluded the second World Cup Round in Idre Fjäll. The Swedish women won ahead of Russia in second place and Finland in third, whilst the men won ahead of Norway in second place and Switzerland in third.
