World's best Orienteers take to the streets of Aabenraa and Billund, Denmark

At the weekend (23 - 24 October) some of the World's best Orienteers take to the streets of Aabenraa and Billund, Denmark to run two World Ranking Events organised by the same organisation that will be running the World Orienteering Championships 2022 in Denmark.

The competition was in connection with a training camp for which all National Teams were invited.

Saturday (23 October) was the Sprint race with both the qualification and the finals held in Aabenraa. The town is a real pearl in terms of Sprint Orienteering, with an idyllic town centre, narrow cobbled streets, backyards, and alleyways.  Aabenraa is not completely new to orienteers but this is the first major race to be held here.

In the Men's Kris Jones finished 6th, Chris Smithard 8th, and Alex Chepelin 13th.

In the Women's Charlotte Ward 8th, Alice Leake 11th, Grace Molloy 18th, Jo Shepherd 33rd, and Kristin Maxwell 34th.  With Cecile Andersen and Fiona Bunn finishing 1st and 2nd respectively in the B final. Marie Eades finished 17th.

Billund hosted the Knock out Sprint on Sunday, with the venue right next to the Lego House in the town centre. The qualification races took place in the morning, with the finals in the afternoon.

After both Grace Molloy and Chris Smithard finished top in their Semi-Finals, they progressed to the final where Grace finished 3rd and Chris finished 5th. Charlotte Ward finished 4th in Quarter Final 3 and Cecilie Andersen 5th in Quarter Final 2.

One of the aims of the races is for the World Orienteering Championship organisers to have the opportunity to test parts of the setup for next Summer's World Championships so runners received a high-quality event, with a representative of what awaits at the championships next summer.
