#4: ORIENTEERING THROUGH THE SEVEN DECADES – 1990 - 1999

Congratulations to HM Queen Elizabeth II on her Platinum Jubilee year.

ORIENTEERING THROUGH THE SEVEN DECADES

7 DECADES, OVER 7 DAYS!

------

Orienteering has been enjoyed from generation to generation over the seven decades

It’s as true in Orienteering as in many sports: Once the Orienteering bug has bitten, it gets transmitted further from generation to generation.  Many clubs in the UK have families with two or even three active generations as the backbone of the club.

Orienteering is unique in that you can have a Mother / Father competing at the same time with their children and their own parents!

Melanie Elkinginton has kindly given permission for this family article to be published today.

In your club, how many families do you have with three successive generations as members?

  • 1993: Great Britain won its first World Orienteering Championship medals in Foot Orienteering, with a bronze for Yvette Baker (née Hague) and silver for the men’s relay team (Jon Musgrave, Martin Bagness, Stephen Palmer, Steve Hale).
  • 1995: Yvette Baker (née Hague) won two silver medals at the World Orienteering Championships.
  • 1995: Electronic punching: EMIT was first used widely in international events. No more control cards! SI was introduced a little later.

  • 1999: Yvette Baker (née Hague) won the gold medal in Short Distance at the World Orienteering Championships held on home soil.

Jennie Taylor Communications Officer, says:  "It's quite impossible in just a few news items to portray adequately all aspects of British Orienteering Federation's and British Orienteering Activities over the last seven decades.  There are so many people across the UK who have contributed so much to British Orienteering's growth and development."

What are your personal orienteering highlights from this decade (1990-1999)?
