Location

Venue:South Gare
Nearest town:Redcar
Postcode:TS10 5BE
Grid reference:NZ574256
Parking information:South Gare is a spit of land created in the 19th Century to extend and improve Teesport. Dorman Long – and probably other Iron Masters – dumped lines of slag from the blast furnaces to create the base for the breakwater and the road. Registration will be at grid reference NZ 574256, with parking along the edge of the adjacent Gare road. The nearest postcode is TS10 5BE, but please note that this is at the NW edge of Redcar and you will need to drive another 0.8 mile to get to the event. Click on the link to see a map. You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event. You can also get directions if you put in your starting location. The event will be signed from the junction of the A1085 (Trunk Road) and the A1042 (Kirkleatham Lane) in Redcar. The Start will be about 300 metres from Registration
Dog rules:Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome at this event, and can be taken out into the competition area.

There are small cliffs, steep slopes, ponds, marshes, fences, brambles and some pieces of sharp slag in the competition area. Please bear these in mind while competing. Insurance: Please note that if you have competed in three orienteering events registered with British Orienteering and you have not joined an orienteering club which is a member of British Orienteering then you are not covered by our public liability insurance. Courses

Course description:Terrain: Sand dunes and slag ridges give a very technical relief with a profusion of hills, knolls, gullies and depressions. Paths offer fast progress. Unlike at last year's event, nearly all of the paths are now mapped and can be used for navigation, but it's still wise to use other features for confirmation. The sand is quite consolidated on the landward side but becomes soft close to the beach. The Marram grass can make running off the paths quite uncomfortable. Please note that FULL LEG COVER will be COMPULSORY due to hard slag. Map: 1:7,500. 2.5m contours. Updated and geo-referenced by Paul Taylor in 2018. The maps will be printed on waterproof paper. The control descriptions will be printed on the maps, and separate loose copies will be available at Registration. The White and Yellow course maps will be available at Registration
