The nations are ranked using results from two individual format finals (Sprint and Middle Distance) and one team event (Sprint Relay). As the affected World Orienteering Championships 2016 events have finished, the International Orienteering Federation has now declared, that these 13 best nations (Poland excluded) are as follows: Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine.

Jackie Newton, Performance Manager, British Orienteering, said:  "The World Games, which happens every four years, offers the highest level of competition for non-Olympic Sports and we are delighted that we will have the opportunity to take our top athletes. The events that are on offer include the Sprint and Mixed Sprint Relay where, last week, we achieved our best results at the World Orienteering Championships in Sweden.  We will be looking to be amongst the medals in these events in Poland next year and add to those medals that were won by Heather Munro, in 2005, and Jamie Stevenson, in 2001.”

Mike Hamilton, Chief Executive of British Orienteering, said:  “This is an exciting opportunity not only for the Great Britain team and all of their supporters, but also for the sport of orienteering as a whole.  The Great Britain team achieved good results at the recent World Orienteering Championships in Sweden through their hard training and commitment to the sport.  It is good news that Great Britain has earned the right to compete at the highest level of competition at The World Games in Poland next year.  It will be fantastic for British athletes to be part of these exciting events and compete for medals whilst showcasing the sport of orienteering to others across the world.”
