World Orienteering Day is Today!

Wednesday 24 May 2017

Today is World Orienteering Day and sees thousands of orienteering events taking place across the world!

Today it would be great if you could help us to generate some momentum throughout the day via social media using #WorldOrienteeringDay and mentioning British Orienteering or @GBROrienteering

The events are taking place in cities, parks, forests and in school yards and people of all ages are encouraged to take part. Orienteering is a go to sport for all ages and fitness abilities.

In the UK, 89 events are taking place throughout today and are being enjoyed by participants. Local orienteering clubs across the country are encouraging newcomers to “have a go!” and try the sport of orienteering. Orienteering clubs are encouraging all those people who have already tried orienteering maybe in their school years to come along and have a go. Likewise, these events are a great way to find out more about the sport with the opportunity to take part in simple navigation.

The aim is to get as many people orienteering here in the UK and across the world and help establish an “Official International Orienteering Federation Record” for the participation in World Orienteering Day.

2017 is also an important year within the sport of orienteering. British Orienteering is celebrating its Golden Jubilee, 50 years as a Federation. British Orienteering’s actual anniversary date is 17 June 2017.

For more information about events and activities taking place today, go to www.britishorienteering.org.uk/event and type in the name ‘World Orienteering Day’ and then click on ‘Filter’. You can then select the World Orienteering event you wish to take part in.
