Challenging Day For The British Team In The Latvian Forest

Ralph Street

The first race of World Cup Round 3 took place today in Cesis, Latvia with a Middle distance race.

With the 2018 World Championships being hosted in Latvia this is also an ideal competition to pick up the experience for next year's event. It was a challenging day for the British team with good runs, unfortunately, being let down by mistakes pushing positions down.

After the event, a few of the athletes commented on their race.

Charlotte Watson  said:

'I very much enjoyed the orienteering but a few frustrating mistakes. Learnt a lot and excited for my first senior relay tomorrow.'

Hector Haines, said:

'It was fun to get back into the international race scene in what was one of the most stacked races I can ever remember! First time in the Latvian terrain for me, so steep learning curve but came out with lots of motivation to improve. Listened to the alarm bells and stopped myself making big mistakes, but lots of small ones plus hesitations gave me my performance today. Nevertheless, had a good feeling in many parts and definitely think that I can master this terrain better in the future!'

Cat Taylor, said:

'I wasn't satisfied at all with my race, it was scrappy all the way. But it gives the motivation to start the autumn's technical training after some weeks mostly running. I really enjoyed the forest, too!'

Tomorrow is the Forest Relay. A rare occurrence in a World Cup race outside of the World Championships but one all of the athletes are looking forward to.
