WOC 2018 Selected Athlete Interviews

Athlete Name:  Charlotte Ward

Age: 25

Club:  Humberside and Lincoln Orienteers (HALO)

Profile

-----------

Congratulations on your selection to compete for GBR at the 2018 World Orienteering Championships.

Please tell us...Who was the first person you told the news to about being selected for the World orienteering Championships?
CW:  "My Mum and Dad were the first people to know."

Charlotte Ward (HALO)

What made you choose orienteering over any of the other available sports?
CW:  "I enjoy orienteering because of the combined physical and mental challenge. I particularly enjoy running fast through urban terrain, so the sprint disciplines are my natural event preferences."

Where is your favourite place to orienteer?
CW:  "Sheffield. I live there and we have an abundance of varied sprint terrain."

What is your favourite training session?
CW:  "A fast track session; something like 10x300m with 1-minute recovery."

How are you preparing for the World Championships in August?
CW:  "I am trying to do as many orienteering events as possible. I find that I prepare best by going through the orienteering processes and repeating my pre-race routines as much as possible. Events where there are other people, controls and SI out in the terrain (or even better, SI air) are perfect for me."

Who or what will be your biggest threat?
CW:  "I don’t see any threats from the terrain or other people. I aim to run and orienteer to the best of my ability, and most importantly enjoy orienteering on the World stage."

Thank you, Charlotte. Congratulations again on being selected to compete in the World Orienteering Championships. We wish you all the best with the rest of your preparation!
