January Talent Squad Weekend - Part 2

On Sunday last weekend the talent squad athletes continued their preparation for 2019 with two detailed sprint exercises. They travelled to the University of Surrey, one of the more complex and technical university sites.

They began with a “Puzzle O” in which pairs were given one 2- sided piece of A4 paper (odd Legs on one side, even on the reverse) with the 16 individual Legs “cut and pasted” at random on them.  Athlete 'A' then looked at Leg 1, decided left or right - this being the purpose of the exercise, and then saw if they arrived at the control before their partner, who had run the alternative route. A quick hand over of the map and Athlete 'B' made the decision on Leg 2 and so on. Coaches did a combination of shadowing and short periodic debriefing at a few controls as they made their way to the finish.

A short break was followed by a Mass Start.  One person head-to-head race around a cunningly gaffled course. The start immediately threw the athletes into a labyrinth of angular residential blocks, on a decent slope, with an immediate butterfly loop. The combination of individual decision making when literally all in a tight bunch and a butterfly before much time for settling into the map put the athletes under the sort of pressure that major competitions bring.

The weekend gave athletes a great opportunity to train intensely, discuss issues in one-to-one sessions with coaches, and of course meet up with their squad colleagues and compare revision/Uni/social plans - reinforces the strengths of these developing athletes.

There were no injuries beyond a few grazes but a few embarrassed faces as one of the squad apparently does not know that 'Woking' and 'Dorking' are not the same place and had a quick relocation courtesy of Southern Rail, and four young ladies who had to be released by site security from the wrong university building looking for their cloakroom.

Thanks must go to Paul Murgatroyd and Mark Nixon who organised, again, an excellent set of activities, venues, and technical sessions and to the volunteer coaches, Zoe Harding, Rona Lindsay, Anwen Darlington, Tom Bray who gave up their weekends.
