2019 Orienteering World Cup 1 Preview

This weekend sees the start of the international competitive season with IOF World Cup 1 taking place in Finland. The city of Helsinki and organizing club Helsingin Suunnistajat together with Finnish Orienteering Federation host the competition from 6th to 11th June.  The event features two individual forest races a Middle distance and a Chasing Start Long distance and a Mixed Sprint Relay. The event centre is Kisakallio, about a third of the way between Helsinki and Turku.

Starts this weekend

The important dates and locations: 

  • Saturday, June 8th - Middle Distance Races - Nuuksio National Park. 

  • Sunday, June 9th - Long Distance Races with chasing starts. 

  • Tuesday, June 11th - Sprint Relay - Helsinki City Centre.

The British team has seen some changes since the selection was announced a month ago with unavailability's for several reasons, yet the team remains a strong one.  

Middle and Chasing Start Long Distance Races 

For the long race, the chasing format means start times are determined by the middle race results. The first ten in each race will gain bonus seconds, from 2 minutes for the winner to 5 seconds for 10th.
