Approximately 200 juniors travelled to Cowms Rocks, Derbyshire and Tankersley, Yorkshire last weekend for the annual Junior Inter-Regional Championships (JIRCs). Representing their regions, the juniors competed in Individual and Team Relay races.
Cowms Rocks is a new area for orienteering near Ladybower Reservoir and provided both steep and flat moorland terrain. Conditions were very wet and windy, so everyone was drenched at the end of their run. The Scottish team ScotJos took a commanding lead, with North West and Yorkshire & Humberside squads battling closely for 2nd and 3rd place.
After an entertaining evening ceilidh, the teams came back for more wind and rain at Tankersley, a favourite area for South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO), offering fast and exciting relay courses. South West won the boys class, and Yorkshire & Humberside took the girls class.
The overall results showed a convincing win for Scotland, even with some of their top runners away at the Junior European Cup in France. Well played to ScotJos and congratulations to all the teams, coaches and drivers, plus thanks to SYO for organising another great weekend.
JIRCs 2019 Final Results
