British Orienteering Launches Event Safety eLearning

To help support our members and participants in these social distancing times, British Orienteering is developing and providing a range of eLearning resources to go alongside our qualifications and awards to support, engage and provide extra information for those who wish to extend their learning.

Our very first eLearning course is now in the final stages of development and is based on the Event Safety Course.

The final phase of the development and feedback is to provide an opportunity for up to 30 members to express an interest to access the course by mid-day on Friday 24th July. We are inviting those that have already attended and or who have tutored on the course to take part and feedback.

Background

In 2016 the British Orienteering rules were amended to include:

  • Attendance at a British Orienteering Event Safety and Welfare Workshop is a mandatory requirement for all Organisers, Planners, Controllers and other key officials at all levels of British Orienteering registered Events.
  • Attendance and certification on an Event Safety eLearning course will be the equivalent of an Event Safety face to face workshop.
  • The tutor-led face to face workshop will continue to be delivered on its current demand-led basis for those who wish to access their learning traditionally.

The course aims to provide for both current and prospective event organisers and planners an overview of the safety requirements and issues that may arise in staging an orienteering event. It has a particular focus on risk management and the means of controlling risks at acceptable levels. We anticipate that those undertaking the course will have had previous experience in carrying out risk assessments.

First eLearning course launched

This interactive activity will support the learner to understand how to identify, access and control to an acceptable level the risks involved with an event.

To access this eLearning course please email: hblackman@britishorienteering.org.uk, quoting your British Orienteering membership number together with the name of your club. Howard will then arrange for you to log onto the course free of charge.

The course should take around 45 minutes to an hour to complete, and at the end of the course there is an assessment which takes the form of a quiz taken from the course content. On completion, you will then receive an electronic certificate and your database record will be updated accordingly.
