In England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, for active coaches to remained licensed, depending on who they coach, they will need to complete the following requirements.

  • Young people - It is a requirement to have tutor-led training.
  • Adults - It is required to complete an appropriate on-line safeguarding module.
  • Adults at risk – It is strongly advised that they attend an on-line self-led adult safeguarding training.

Following attendance at a workshop, there is a three-year cycle of safeguarding training for those coaching children and young people. Alternating between a tutor-led course and an online refresher module.

There are a variety of courses available and if you have an existing certificate for a course you have undertaken in the last three years, this may be acceptable. Please contact Peter Brooke on with a copy of your certificate for confirmation so that this can be added to your qualifications.

In Scotland, coaches must complete the Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sports (CWPS) course.

This course has two steps both of which must be completed for an SOA coach to be qualified in their Safeguarding training.

These are:

  • Complete the Sport Scotland eLearning module on Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport. This takes about 45 minutes.
Access to the Module 1 course materials can be gained by clicking here
  • Attend and complete the tutor-led 3-hour training.
