SW Junior Squad’s Return to Training on a glorious Spring Saturday

Report by Peter Maliphant, BOK & SWJOS Coach

After more than a year of almost no racing, very little training as a group, and relying on more than seventy Zoom calls to keep us together as a team and focussed on orienteering, the SW Junior Squad returned to training on a glorious Spring Saturday. Twenty one junior athletes, plus coaches, former SWJOS members and quite a few parents spent the day at Lyncombe, near Bristol, dusting off their orienteering skills after a long time without competition. Exercises included refreshing some basic skills such as aiming off, as well as running a competitive Green course to get some race practice.

Six new and potential SWJOS members came along for the first time, whilst existing squad members had time to talk to coaches and each other about their plans for the next couple of months. Everyone is now looking forward to competing in several races during April and May, with many focussed on getting into the best condition they can for the selection races for junior camps that, hopefully, will take place in early June.
