DBS Checks Update - May 2021

British Orienteering would like to provide an update on the requirements for DBS’s and when those involved within the sport, particularly within the coaching and junior environments should apply for a DBS.

DBS’s play a crucial role in ensuring that those who are unsuitable to work within certain areas of the sport are prevented from doing so.

It is important to note that there has been a change in who requires a DBS and as a result of this, more people may be eligible for a check and should have a DBS or the level of DBS might have changed.

The flow chart below will help to provide an easy to view assessment if an individual role requires a DBS.

For those who think they need a DBS with or without a barred list check, then they will need to complete the DBS eligibility form found here and send it to info@britishorienteering.org.uk where this will be checked and if required, they will be added to the online portal and sent further details in order to complete the check. A DBS from another organisation maybe acceptable if it meets the requirements of the Orienteering role, for more details on this visit the DBS webpage.

All DBS’s conducted for British Orienteering are conducted by First Advantage Online Disclosures.

For more information on DBS, visit the DBS page on the British Orienteering website or contact Lead Safeguarding Officer Peter Brooke on pbrooke@britishorienteering.org.uk.
