Cornwall Orienteering Club head to Hardhead Downs on top of Bodmin Moor

It is great to see orienteering events and activities happening far and wide, and orienteers being able to enjoy what they enjoy the most.

Jennie Taylor, Communications Officer at British Orienteering caught up with Phil Newall, Chair of Cornwall Orienteering Club (KERNO) about their club's local event which they held last weekend on Sunday 23 May on Hardhead Downs, Bodmin Moor.

Phil Newall (KERNO) comments:

"What a filthy day! On top of Bodmin Moor in a strong wind and driving rain is never good, especially not in May.

Needless to say, I didn’t get any pictures even though I had taken my camera along to the event – it was just too wet.

On the positive side, around 70 people attended covering all the colour courses and I think most people enjoyed themselves despite the weather – that’s orienteers for you!

The courses were well planned and controlled and we had also recently had the southern portion of the map re-done in readiness for this event as well as the Middle distance event we are holding here next year as part of the Tamar Triple event. We also decided to use a 1:7500 map as there is a wealth of detail on the map.

Winning times seemed about right and as usual with Hardhead, the main part of the moor was very fast.

This map shows the Brown course (7.9km) which Scott Collier won in 48:42."

"In terms of Covid, all participants pre-entered so competitors simply had to download at the end and get their splits.

With a field of only 70, even though competitors were given start blocks, there was never any congestion at the start and in reality people could start when they liked, albeit adhering to social distancing.

All in all, an excellent event - apart from the weather - and proves yet again that you really would struggle to find a better sport than orienteering to be “Covid resistant”.

Let’s hope for better weather next year for the Tamar Triple."
