Course description

The Qualification

The Level Two Award is for those coaches who wish to coach the techniques and skills of orienteering for club members from beginners to more experienced orienteers and apply them on all areas except for those that are complex, exposed or mountainous. The award is only suitable for those with experience of coaching orienteering.

Course Pre-Requisites

  • Be a minimum of 17 years of age on the first day of the course (and be at least 18 years of age at completion of all the assessments)
  • Complete 3 short pre-course tasks
  • Have experience of orienteering and coaching orienteering

 

The Course Content

  • Induction and pre-course tasks - 3 hours
  • Course of training including practical and theory – 18 hours
  • Home study prior to assessment - 20 hours
  • Deliver a further 5 coaching sessions that are progressive and mentored by a qualified coach, following the course and prior to final assessment

The 2-day Training Course includes:

  • Coaching styles and philosophy
  • How to Coach Skills
  • Appropriate activities for adults and young participants including ways of planning for mixed ability groups
  • Safety management
  • Planning, delivering & evaluating a series of 3 short, linked orienteering technique coaching sessions for a range of different orienteering abilities (practical sessions)
  • Warming up and cooling down (practical)
  • Shadowing (practical)
  • Components of fitness
  • Mental aspects of orienteering

 

The Assessments:

  • Formative assessment of candidate’s coaching and knowledge - 6 hours. Five written tasks and a short assessed coaching session. Usually on day 3 of the training course
  • Summative assessment of a series of coaching sessions, further written tasks and an observed practical coaching session - 6 hours

The Portfolio:

Candidates will be required to complete a full and detailed portfolio, which is task-based.

 

The Portfolio will include evidence of:

  • Gathering information – including risk assessments and session plans
  • Roles, skills, qualities and ethical values
  • Fitness  and mental training for orienteering
  • Anti-doping
  • Nutrition for sport
  • Coaching styles and effective communication
  • Planning, delivering and evaluating coaching sessions

What Support can be expected?

Support on the course from British Orienteering Coach Educators to:

  • Complete portfolio work for tasks 1 - 5
  • Undertake the formative assessment: the assessment of tasks 1 – 6 including a practical coaching session at technical difficulty 4/5
  • Detailed learner action plan
  • Signposting to mentors and learning opportunities

How long will it take to gain the level 2 award?

  • 2 years is allowed from day 1 of the training course to completion
  • The training course takes 3 days. It is usual for there to be a gap of a few weeks between days 2 and 3 to allow time for doing the written tasks 1 - 5 and to prepare for the observed coaching session, task 6. Coaches deliver a session to their peers on the course.
  • Following day 3, the learner coach must plan, deliver & evaluate a series of 4 linked sessions on one technique and 1 physical training session to suitable groups.
  • The summative (final) assessment is the marking of tasks 7 – 9 and an observed, technical coaching session, task 10.
  • Most learners should be able to complete the Award within 6 – 9 months of attending the course.

What will I be qualified to do?

  • Those accredited at Level Two will be able to coach the full range of techniques and skills in the modern sport of orienteering and to lead a group of coaches in delivering a programme in a safe and enjoyable way.
  • Coaches accredited will be able to introduce the sport to participants, coach at club training sessions and coach athletes competing in local and regional events.
